As security professionals, the solutions we provide are frequently compared to the consumer grade products that you may find at your local big box store.

Many of these products are designed for mass appeal and provide the illusion of security that will warm your heart but really offer very little in the way of security and reliability.

One example of this is the recent announcement that Nest (google) would be reducing the quality settings of their customers cameras to conserve internet bandwidth during the COVID 19 crisis.

While their motives may be thoughtful given the circumstances, I will argue these surveillance cameras are essential for the security of the customers that purchased them and reducing their capability without the consent of those they are protecting is the ultimate in big brother telling you what is right and what is wrong.

Spend your dollars wisely and don’t be fooled by the illusion of security. As always, you get exactly what you pay for.
